The Overwatch League's problems can't be papered over with rainbows

When the Overwatch League's Los Angeles Valiant won the season's fourth stage after previously finishing fourth, eighth, and third, I joked that it must have been the power of their Pride patches.
Halfway through the stage, the team announced a partnership with the charity , which aims to promote equality for LGBTQ+ sports players. It was the first time that the latter had worked with an esports organisation, and saw the Valiant sport rainbow coloured versions of their logo on their team jerseys. It was a gesture that immediately endeared me to them - you support me, a queer woman, so I'll support you, too.
But it wasn't only a gesture. As well as selling the patches, with profits going to the charity, the two organisations will work together on videos and events to promote inclusivity and acceptance in the Overwatch League and more widely. And, crucially, You Can Play provided diversity and inclusion training to the Valiant players and staff.

Blizzard reveals schedule for Gamescom 2018

Added: 19.08.2018 13:06 | 0 views | 0 comments

Blizzard has announced its schedule of events for Gamescom, the massive European games expo held each year in Cologne, Germany. As you might have expected, the company has presentations ready for each of its tentpole franchises, and they’ll all be going down on the main stage on Wednesday, August 22. The schedule was first published through the Blizzard at Gamescom app, which offers expo-goers an augmented reality guided tour through the Blizzard booth at Gamescom. If you’re attending Gamescom, you can use the app to scan various displays and items in the Blizzard area, and earn a chance to win in-game loot. Here’s what Blizzard has planned for Wednesday. All times are in Central European Time:
  • 10:30 - Opening
  • 11:15 - Overwatch
  • 12:30 - World of Warcraft
  • 13:15 - StarCraft
  • 14:30 - Heroes of the Storm
  • 15:45 - Diablo
Obviously, what you’ll want to watch depends on which Blizzard games you’re interested in, but there are a couple items worth highlighting here: First, Blizzard has said they’ll be unveiling new Overwatch content at Gamescom, and that’ll likely be during the stage presentation Wednesday.

Just in case you're one of the six people left in the world yet to try Overwatch, Blizzard has announced another free weekend that perfectly ties in with the final pre-Christmas UK bank holiday of 2018.
Running between 7pm (UK time) on 23rd and 8am (UK time) on 28th August, the trial will be available across PC, PlayStation and Xbox One, and offer the full complement of 28 heroes, including new kid - well, hamster - on the block, .
All modes will be available across all 18 maps, and you'll be able to keep any progress you make should you be tempted into finally shelling out for the full game - just make sure you use the same account and platform you used to play your test drive.
